Felted Cartography

These maps were tediously cut, stacked, and stitched by hand. Took me forever but it was worth it.

Some “Anthropol” status volcanoes in a Fuller projection. That’s maybe a truncated version of anthropological? It’s what the attribute said.
Crater Lake, Oregon. Maybe the prettiest place I’ve observed with my eyes. I was 18 when I saw it. Oregon was the last of the 50 states I’ve visited. Isn’t that weird?
An eastern stretch of the Grand Canyon. Once I hiked down it in April. It was snowing at the rim and over 100° Fahrenheit at the river. I think that’s called adiabatic cooling?
These are terrestrial ecoregions. They look pretty cool as a felted tapestry. The blue buttons mark the locations of million-plus population cities, naturally.
These are rivers and large cities. The oceanic piping stitched on represents 10 degree latitude (upd-downiness) and longitude (left-rightiness) intervals.

Also, I am lying these are digital maps. Here is an ArcGIS Pro resource to get cracking away at felting your own maps. And I do some pondering at the end of this blog post about why it’s worthwhile.
