Geography, and the maps that pour out of it, is just a blast. But sometimes we work so hard on the data and analysis that we don’t have time to “make it pretty.” But designing a map is more than just arts and crafts, it’s a critical step in communicating all of that investment.
In this presentation for URISA Texas, a regional GIS interest group, you are invited to follow a rambling narrated process of a map maker’s design choices, packed full of hows, whys, rationalizations, and hunches from default to completion.
There’s no one right way to make a map, but we’ll have some fun making this one.

John,
I work in a very data-centric-get-it-on-the-page environment and I really have been re-energized watching your many video tutorials and reading your blog posts on Esri.com. Thanks for your inspiration!
