Ah NACIS, how I love you. A one week full-on map-nerd-fest. I got to do a short talk on the free-wheeling Practical Cartography Day, and then a session the following day.
The Practical Cartography Day demo showed my process for making contour lines that are aware of what direction they are facing so you can do cool hillshade sorts of things to them.
And this thing about smashing hand-drawn concepts into the digital environment. Inspired by the thinking of David Pye, I talk about (and show) my attempts to merge these two forms of craft-ship into one process that looks hand-wrought but benefits from the flexibility of dynamic scale and texture sampling…
But don’t take my word for it! Check out all the amazing skills and secrets and resources that map people shared throughout the week.
