Here is a map showing the top ten most popular US National parks, by recreation visitor count. The parks are presented to scale, for a sense of comparative size.
Here are some resources for making maps that look like this, if you are so inclined or just curious. I like this topographic treatment because it’s handsome but also it gives a painterly impression of the terrain of these places with an overall elevation indication along with a general roughness.
My parents were teachers, which was pretty great. In summers we’d pile into a vehicle and spend much of the summer cruising around. My Dad would snap slides for use in his classes. It was an amazing childhood, much of it spent in these magnificent places. Of this list, I’ve not been to Acadia. I have my sights on it.
For posterity, here are some Nelson family roadtrip snapshots…

Beautiful map! I love it. I hate to be too much of a stickler to details but I thought I’d point out that it’s actually Rocky Mountain National Park and not Rocky Mountains National Park.

Excellent map and great memories to have. My dad was a firefighter and was able to take his vacation and work extra days. Our family could spend the month of May traveling the west. I think my love a maps came from that. Still remember a detailed southwestern ghost townmap I had. Wide open spaces at a young age changes you. Fresh air fiends, unite.
